Trafalgar

Trafalgar Refight

It is funny how it sometimes takes an arranged game to finally make you take those figures out of the cupboard and paint them at the last minute. Then you wonder why it took you so long.

We played an all day Saturday refight of Trafalgar at the Guildford Club on November 5th with 6 players a side and I had to supply six ships. I’d bought these from Langton at a Colours show about five years ago, looked at the rules, decided they were too complex and put them away in a drawer.

So, the week before the refight, I pulled them out, undercoated them on the Monday and then spent 3 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday night painting them. For an hour a ship, I think that they came out very well. There are pictures of a sample British and French Ship in the Gallery.

The refight was played using rules written by a club member (which should be up on the club website soon along with pictures) and the game went very well.

Victory was the first ship to break the allied line and suffered heavily because of it, eventually striking her colours.

At the end of the day, the British were ahead on ships captured and sunk, but lost a moral victory over the loss of the Flagship and failing to reach Nelson’s target of 20 ships.

Now, having painted these 6 ships I’m quite tempted by some more and that lovely Langton dockyard…

Napoleon in Egypt

November 6th, 2005

French Infantry Marching and Command

My new range of Napoleon in Egypt Figures have finally been announced and will be on sale at Warfare in Reading on 19th/20th November.

They have taken a while to bring to fruition, but the reaction has been extremely good so far and hopefully that enthusiasm will turn into sales :-)

See the Black Hat Miniatures website for full details on the range.

Gallery

November 4th, 2005

I have finally added some pictures to the Gallery page.

These are three pictures of 54mm Imex ACW based for Brother Against Brother.

These were painted up as tests to see if I could do a reasonable job of 54mm and to make a change after painting loads of 15mm Martians for the Martian Empires Demo game at Valhalla!

The intention is to finish 30 figures a side for some ACW skirmish and to create some suitable 54mm terrain over the next year as well.

I’ll upload a few more pictures as I get around to taking them…

Hannibal

October 30th, 2005

I received the new Hannibal Punic Wars supplement for Warhammer Ancient Battles last week and have now managed to read through it.

I think it is probably the best supplement that Warhammer Historical have produced so far. The book covers the history and the three Punic Wars in sufficient detail to whet your appetite and then lists a very comprehensive bibiography in the back for further reading.

The army lists, which are the main purpose of the supplement, are comprehensive and cover the Carthaginian and Republic Roman armies along with the expected Spanish, Italians and Numidians, as well as Ligurians and Gauls.

I particularly liked the new Manipular rule which allows you to recreate the three line maniple formation of the Roman legion and gives you enough of a benefit that you are likely to do it in a game to get the best from your troops.

The photographs are impressive, as always, and there is a good summary of both the major battles of the period and some interesting smaller skirmishes to refight.

Having read it, I am even more inspired to crack on with my HAT 20mm Republican Romans and I have bought a second copy of the book to give to my Punic opponent to inspire him to finish painting his Carthaginians!

Convention Catch up

October 3rd, 2005

I have attended two conventions this year as a trader /demonstrator. These were:

Valhalla

This is organised by the Farnborough Wargames Club and has been running for 30 years. I organised a participation display by the Guildford Wargames Club in 2001 as the first show game that we had ever run. This was Darkest Africa and went down so well that we have been back every year since.

In 2002, I was away and the rest of the club put on a Marlburian demonstration game.

In 2003 I organised a GASLIGHT Victorian SF game that won a prize for best Participation game (a surprise to me as I didn’t even know there was an award!) and in 2004 I ran a Four Musketeers participation. All with plenty of help from other club members with figures/scenery/rules suggestions.

In 2005, for commercial reasons, I wanted to run a Martian Empires demonstration game, while Ian ran the Fighting15s trade stand and sold the figures. The rest of Guildford were happy to help out with the game, but I did end up painting nearly all the figures myself and creating the scenery for the game. It was a very hectic 2 months!

The day went very well, with a lot of interest in the rules and the figures. Farnborough is a small show and in recent years seems to become quieter and quieter in the afternoons. This isn’t helped by it being held on Father’s Day.

Even so, I will continue attending as it’s close and a fun show to go to. Next year though, I will be taking a break from running games and will just be selling..

Phototgraphs from the Valhalla game are on the Black Hat website

Bifrost

This is the Society of Fantasy and Science Fiction Wargamers open day held in the Midlands. This was the first time I had attended the show, either a a punter or trader, and I was very impressed by the organisation and the whole day.

The emphasis is very much on gaming, with a Horde of the Things competition, and a lot of participation games. This meant that people seemed to come for the whole day, rather than a few hours (as at other shows) and although there were only 200 attendees, we sold well over 3 times what we had taken at Valhalla.

That is the advantage of a targetted audience show, I guess, as we knew that only SF and Fantasy stock would sell.

We were unable to get into SELWG as a trader and I am away, so won’t be attending as a punter, so the next show will be Warfare in Reading, where we first launched Black Hat Miniatures last year. And this year we will have another new range to launch as well..

Update at Last

September 29th, 2005

I’ve neglected this blog for a few months due to lack of time - both because of illness and because of being too busy and not playing all that many games.

I am currently moving ISPs, hence the new look and layout.

I hope to update this more regularly in the future

Martians, sir, thousands of ‘em….

May 26th, 2005

Preparation for the Martian Empires demonstration game at Valhalla (Farnborough, 19th June) is well under way and I have the complete game laid out on my games table. I have spent the last few weeks taking figures and scenery off the table, painting them and replacing them and the game is finally coming together into a complete form.

It is also a good excuse to finally use the huge rocketship that I bought from Scheltrum a few years ago and have never managed to get around to painting or using. It was originally bought for a planned “First Men on the Moon” game, along wih a bunch of Selenites and some British and Prussian Aethernauts - which are still languishing in a drawer somewhere. Now though, it will do service as the cylinder ship The Lord Palmerston.

This will be the 4th game I have run at Valhalla in the last 5 years and the first demonstration game rather than participation. Although it is taking a lot of preparation, possibly more than the last few skirmish games we have run, I am hoping that it will be a more relaxing affair than the participation games that I have run in the past (particularly the one where a child bounced a zeppelin over his head!).

We played through an example Martian Empires game at the Guildford Club a few weeks ago to familiarise the people helping me out with the rules and it was interesting to see the new questions and thoughts about the rules that came up.

I am currently attempting to get the rules into a form that can be laid-out for publication and am hoping that we will have the full rules printed and available for the end of the year.

Apart from ME, I have been playing some more LOTR Battle Companies game and we played a very large all-day Stargrunt II Star Wars game last saturday using micro-machines figures. As the commander of the Imperial Force, we were doing well until I was struck down by a stray shot! The rebels just escaped - it was a fun game.

I like the Stargrunt rules, but still find all the clutter associated with them (the various counters, etc) slightly off putting. I like the games table to just have figures on - but it is always a compromise between book-keeping and counters.

Hope to see some of you at Valhalla or the SFSFW show Bifrost on July 3rd….

I survived Salute!

April 25th, 2005

The Monday after Salute and I have just about recovered.

I usually have a very civilised approach, turning up at 11am and staying until 3pm and thus avoiding the rush.

This year, howver, I had to deliver stock of Martian Empires figures and our new Martian Empires Vehicles to the Stronghold Miniatures stand when the show opened. This meant that Ian Marsh and I were up early and caught an early train (last year our train failed to stop at Clapham Junction!) and after a very smooth journey arrived at Olympia at 8.45!

We grabbed a coffee and a snack and joined the Q-busters queue at 9.30, getting inside just before 10am. We went straight to the Stronghold stand, met up with Mike and his wife Mary, and once Ian had met up with a couple of Belgian customers to drop off some Eureka figures we were relatively free to wander.

The show was less crowded than last year, due to there being a 4th florr that housed a lot of games and the fantasy re-enactors (and was incredibly hot and sticky). I didn’t even bother fighting my way to the Bring and Buy - even at 2.40pm it was still 2 deep.

I bought most things on my shopping list - tents, baggage and mealie bags for the Martian Empires demo game at Valhalla, some Cotton Jim’s Flags from Stronghold for my British troops, 5 bags of War of the Roses figures from Old Glory to bulk out my WAB army.

I was very good and only bought the Beyond Golden Gate supplement from Gripping Beast, rather than the Sassanid Persian army that I really wanted but I did give into temptation of the Hasslefree stand and bought a number of figures - including the best NOT Lara Croft I have seen.

The games were all a very good standard - the Stalingrad Grain Silo in 20mm was very impressive and I liked the layout on Ebob’s Great Escape game.

The vehicles proved very popular and we took home a lot less stock than we had brought with us.

We finally left at 5.15pm when we were kicked out by the Warlords, and staggered of home in time for Doctor Who.

I am thinking about going back next year as a trader as it is now at Excel….

News of my death has been exaggerated…

April 7th, 2005

I can’t believe that it’s nearly 4 months since I posted something here.

You can put it down to a combination of being very busy and being quite ill. As some of you will know, I’ve been ill on and off for the last year and it is showing no signs of getting any better - but at least I now know that it is some form of M.E.

I’ve been spending a fair amount of time on Black Hat Miniatures sorting out new sculpts and new ideas for games.

We have a lot of great figures (sculpted by Alan Marsh) coming out in the Martian Empires range over the next few months and I hope to have the rules whipped into shape to publish sometime in the next 6 months. Then there are vehicles coming, probably some flying ships, more characters and a whole host of other things…

Our second range is finally coming into shape after a false start and some money wasted and is looking good. More news once I have some greens to show.

I hadn’t realised quite how long a range can take to build on the initial interest and turn that interest into orders. The Martian Empires range has only been out a few months (though I have been working on it for a year) and we are now starting to see regular interest and orders. Hopefully the advertising scheduled for the next few months will stir more interest and it will become self-sustaining. Who knows, one day it might even make a profit! :-)

I have been mostly painting Martian Empires figures for the demo game I’ll be running at Valhalla in Farnborough on June 19th, but have managed to get a few more LOTR and some Gripping Beast ancients done.

Gaming has been sporadic, but I’ve played a few games of LOTR, including a Battle Companies try out last Monday which was fun and seemed to work well. Though the promotion options seem to mainly consist of the more expensive figures in blisters!

The Sword and the Flame seems to be taking off at the Guildford club, along with WAB WOTR, and we have a Boxer rebellion game next week. I’m still very tempted to do a full Peking Legation game after seeing the Staine’s Wargamers 55 minutes at Peking game several years ago.

That I think is something that will have to wait a few years though…

Catch Up

December 14th, 2004

I have been rather lax at updating this blog recently (apart from the painting totals). Blame a combination of illness (which has dogged me all this year) and being too busy to sit down a write a coherent, focussed entry.

So, you’ll get some meanderings instead :-)

I attended Warfare on November 20/21 for the first time and really enjoyed the show. It was my first show as a trader and we launched the Black Hat Martian Empires range, which went down well. We had a couple of people who had come specifically to the show just to buy the figures, which was gratifying and shows that the press releases were read by some people! And we sold enough packs to more than cover the cost of the stand.

The show itself is well organised and has a very family friendly atmosphere with the entry fee being £4 for an individual or a family, which meant hat Sunday saw a fair number of families touring the dealer hall and meant that Ian at Fighting15s sold some sets of Teddy Bears!

All the other traders were friendly and I had a good chat with some new faces and caught up with a couple of faces from the long and distant past. It was my first time behind a trade stand since Games Day 1983, but we will be repeating the experience at a few more shows next year.

My only complaint would be the temperature in the dealer’s hall on the Saturday which was positively arctic and a lot of people were forced to leave their stands and walk round the hall just to stop themselves being frozen to the spot!

I am currently painting a lot of Black Hat Martians and British, with the aim to have the infantry done for next year’s demo game (scheduled for Valhalla) by Christmas. After the initial shock of changing to painting 15mm instead of the 28mm I have been painting all year, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by how fast they paint.

Haven’t played a vast number of games over the last few weeks, but we did play a fun Rules With No Name Cowboy game last night with a very well laid out town using White Wash City buildings.

I have a large British vs Zulus game planned for next week using the Martian Empires rules as a play test and to introduce them to some others at the Guildford Club.
